SIGN OF THE APOCALYPSE
This blog turned on the TV and clicked its way to ESPN2 earlier today, hoping to catch some aggressive, testosterone-driven entertainment, which this blog enjoys from time to time. What this blog saw was the National MathCounts Championship, a mathematics quiz bowl for middle and high school students, being broadcast live from Chicago. No. 1 seed Adam Hesterling staged a magnificent comeback victory, edging out No. 3 seed Andrew Chin, 4-3, in the final round of competition.
A network that can cover a MathCounts competition in the same manner as a NFL game (there was a color commentator and an on-screen "chalkboard" diagram) with a straight face is truly deserving of The Voice of Reason Weblog's Political Correctness Prize. It is truly a beacon of hope when society begins to place cerebral pursuits on the same platform as athletic endeavors, but this blog admits it makes for some pretty crappy TV.
