COLLEGES FIGHT BACK AGAINST RIAA
Attorneys for Boston College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are challenging subpoenas issued to students by the Recording Industry Association of America for copyright violation through online file-sharing because the RIAA neglected to give the students adequate notice in accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act. However, it is at best unclear how far the universities' high-powered legal teams will go in the students' defense. ''We're not trying to protect our students from the consequences of copyright infringement,'' said Boston College spokesman Jack Dunn. ''Once the subpoenas are properly filed, we will comply with the subpoenas.''
