"God only knows what is to happen. I see nothing impossible in that supposition. And I see things wonderfully contrived sometimes to make us happy. Where could they find such objects as in America for the exercise of their enchanting art? Especially the lady, who paints landscapes so inimirably. She wants only subjects worthy of immortality to render her pencil immortal. " --Thomas Jefferson, A Dialogue Between The Head and The Heart

    BIBLE-BASHING COLUMNIST BLAMES U.S. FOR 9/11

Reading wrongheaded liberal drivel penned by veteran St. Petersburg Times columnist Bill Maxwell is nothing new. Reading virulent hate-speech that excuses the Sept. 11 hijackers comes as a bitter surprise--like a scalding shower--even from the elitist Maxwell.

In a recent column, " Bible losing its monopoly in hotel rooms," Maxwell comments that the growing trend of hotels' unwillingness to place copies of Gideons' Bibles in hotel rooms, opting instead to offer guest copies of the Bible, Koran and teachings of Buddha upon request, is a positive beacon of social change and a harbinger of tolerance. What a load of ultra-sensitive, PC crap! However, this view is to be expected from a demi-progressive such as Maxwell. His jibe at U.S. culture for inciting the Sept. 11 attacks is inexcusable.

In the same column, Maxwell writes, "If 9/11 teaches Americans anything, it should be that the United States is just one more place in the world community, that various parts of the globe worship in their own way, that we cannot force our way of life on others without expecting resistance and resentment."

So because of the ubiquitous Bibles in hotel rooms--which are bought and placed solely by private contributions to the Gideons organization--the United States in some way got what was coming, did it, Mr. Maxwell? Resistance and resentment, we can live with. Despicable acts of gruesome violence against civilian men, women and children, we most certainly cannot and will not.

"Our way of life" is freedom and democracy, and one can only hope that we "force our way of life on others"--not through military might, but diplomatic and economic pressure--for the betterment of the world. If Mr. Maxwell has so much respect for others' ways of life, this blog thinks he should ante up--hop the next plane to Liberia and write his piffle for the Monrovia Times.
