"God only knows what is to happen. I see nothing impossible in that supposition. And I see things wonderfully contrived sometimes to make us happy. Where could they find such objects as in America for the exercise of their enchanting art? Especially the lady, who paints landscapes so inimirably. She wants only subjects worthy of immortality to render her pencil immortal. " --Thomas Jefferson, A Dialogue Between The Head and The Heart

    VEILED JUSTICE

A Florida woman is suing the state for requiring that she remove her veil for a driver license photo. The woman, who practices Wahhabism (a strict sect of Islam) refuses to show her face to any male except for her husband. She may have sincerely-held religious beliefs, but if this sets a precedent for Muslim women taking veiled photos on licenses, passports and official forms of documentation, it will become impossible for law enforcement agencies to identify these women.

A fight for religion or something more?

This blog proposes a compromise: the state should issue this woman a driver's license bearing her veiled photo, but should stipulate that the license is only good for travel by flying carpet.
