"God only knows what is to happen. I see nothing impossible in that supposition. And I see things wonderfully contrived sometimes to make us happy. Where could they find such objects as in America for the exercise of their enchanting art? Especially the lady, who paints landscapes so inimirably. She wants only subjects worthy of immortality to render her pencil immortal. " --Thomas Jefferson, A Dialogue Between The Head and The Heart

    SLOUCHING TOWARDS GOMORRAH

In a 6-3 decision today, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Texas anti-sodomy law and in doing so nullified similar laws in 13 other states, ruling that the government has no right to intervene in matters of sexual conduct between consenting adults and that the laws were discriminatory to homosexuals and in violation of the 14th Amendment right to privacy.

Apparently, it is the government's job to protect the "freedom" of U.S. citizens to participate in deviant and potentially harmful activities. At least, it is now. Sodomy poses a plethora of medical risks, including the tearing of anal tissue, intestinal tract infections and damage to the prostate gland. It is an unnatural and revolting behavior. The anus is not a sexual organ, it never has been and never will be. Unlike sexual intercourse, which pleasures both partners, anal sex is an act of submission in which only one partner receives stimulation. This practice should not be endorsed as equivalent to intercourse by the Supreme Court.

However, the Court was right in striking those laws that exclusively targeted gays and refused to prosecute heterosexual sodomizers. Such laws are discriminatory and are as grotesque as sodomy itself. This behavior is every bit as deviant when practiced by a man and a woman as when practiced by two men. This blog is of the opinion that, while we don't need sex police, it is counterproductive to lend legal credence to this unnatural and risky behavior.
