SEN. HATCH'S HYPOCRISY
The St. Petersburg Times revealed today in an editorial that Sen. Orrin Hatch (R--Nether Regions) has met with technology experts in recent weeks to discuss the development of an electronic weapon against the sharing of copyrighted material. Hatch's plan would allow "pirates" a grace period, but if a technophile continued downloading illegally, an electronic command similar to a computer virus would disable the user's computer--permanently.
The Times editorial, Senator, songwriter, pirate, notes that Hatch himself offers free downloads obtained without license on his Web site. Hatch earned $18,000 in songwriting royalties last year, and perhaps the chagrin that millions of suburban teen-agers are grooving to the seductive sounds of the sultry senator without having paid for the music has blurred his already myopic vision, evidenced by recent legislation.
This blog is scanning KaZaA right now in search of Sen. Hatch's music. Wait, nothing's coming up. Could it be that his music isn't extremely popular with the file-swapping generation? Excuse this blog while it chuckles at Hatch's hypocrisy--and the divine irony that if his music were being shared, he would be leagues more popular than he is right now.
